Why accreditation matters
Deregulation opened the market to casual operators. For a passenger, that means uncertainty about who actually turns up. For a career driver, it means competing against people who work when they feel like it and stop when they don’t.
The people who suffer most are the ones who need a ride at six in the morning, and the newcomers trying to learn a trade that no longer supports learning it. A vital piece of a city’s transportation ended up served part-time.
MontrealTaxi exists to rebuild that confidence by working exclusively with accredited drivers who hold a valid permit and meet Montréal’s professional standards.

Some cars have a dome. Some don’t. Some have a meter. Some don’t. Some carry the sticker in the back window, some don’t. Montréal went from one of the most tightly regulated taxi industries anywhere to a street where the signals contradict each other.
Ask yourself how a visitor standing outside a hotel is supposed to tell a career professional from someone who decided to drive this week. They can’t. And a system that can’t be read from the sidewalk protects nobody — not the passenger, and not the driver who paid for a permit and keeps a meter calibrated.
This isn’t a complaint about competition. Plenty of people driving for the apps are working just as hard for a good deal less than they were promised. The problem isn’t who is on the road — it’s that nobody can tell what they’re getting until they’re already in the car.
What to check before you get in
- A meter — and a driver who starts it. The fare should be running, visible, and not negotiated at the curb.
- A driver who can show a permit. Any accredited driver can produce theirs without hesitating.
- A rate that didn’t move because it’s raining. The regulated tariff doesn’t change with demand.
